Social media algorithms now play a major role in shaping modern mass media. Instead of editors deciding what stories reach audiences, platforms rely on algorithms that prioritize content based on clicks, likes, shares, and watch time. While this technology helps users discover content aligned with their interests, it also raises important questions about who controls information and how public conversations are formed (Napoli, 2019).

As a result, audiences expect mass media to be fast, interactive, and personalized. People want real-time updates, the ability to comment or share instantly, and content that feels relevant to them personally. However, these expectations also come with downsides. Algorithm-driven feeds can reinforce echo chambers, amplify misinformation, and blur the line between credible journalism and viral content. Mass media is now often judged as much by engagement as by accuracy (Van Dijck et al., 2018).

Culturally, algorithmic media has reshaped how people form opinions and engage in public discourse. Viral trends, influencers, and platform norms increasingly guide social behavior and identity formation online. While these tools empower voices that were previously marginalized, they also contribute to polarization and fragmented cultural narratives. This reality highlights the growing responsibility of technology companies in shaping social culture through design choices.
